"Canada’s nature selfie for our 150th"
– Canadian Wildlife Federation
close

A bioblitz brings together expert naturalists and taxonomic scientists to inventory as many species as possible in a particular area in a set amount of time, typically over 24 hours. The species records are compiled into a single data set of the biodiversity in that location at that point in time.

Often, the experts are joined by interested members of the general public for a community-style bioblitz, which blends scientific inventory, guided educational activities and nature programming so that everyone can contribute to real science, while connecting with nature in a personally meaningful experience.

Join the Virtual BioBlitz project

Celebrate World Environment Day from June 1-12 by helping us build the world’s largest nature database.

Join our Virtual BioBlitz project on iNaturalist.ca.

A BioBlitz is an event where the community comes together to record the biodiversity in a set location over a 24 hour period. We wanted to make BioBlitzing available to everyone, so we partnered with iNaturalist Canada to help you record nature anywhere in the country, at any time.

The Virtual BioBlitz project in the iNaturalist app allows you to be a part of BioBlitz Canada 150 even if there is no organized BioBlitz in your area. Simply join the project and start sharing your discoveries!

This is your chance to make a real contribution to conservation science while exploring the nature you love. Plus, by joining the Virtual BioBlitz project, you automatically qualify for the BioBlitz Canada 150 iNaturalist Contest

JOIN THE PROJECT

You don’t have to be a nature expert to join us — all you need is a smart phone or digital camera and curiosity about the world around you. Here’s how it works:

  1. Download the iNaturalist app and make an account. (Android, iPhone)
  2. Join the BioBlitz Canada 150 Virtual BioBlitz project. Search for Virtual BioBlitz in the iNaturalist app.
  3. Upload a photo or sound clip and add it to the project.

Remember, every observation is important, whether you find a rare butterfly or share photos of a common weed.

CONTRIBUTE TO SCIENCE

By using the iNaturalist app, we can build a living record that scientists and environmental managers can use to monitor changes in biodiversity. Every piece of information on a species – whether it is a photo, sound clip, or GPS location – gives a bigger picture of Canada’s natural history and helps researchers make important conservation decisions.

BIODIVERISTY IS ALL AROUND US

Did you know that Canada is home to an estimated 140,000 species, but so far ONLY HALF have been identified? By participating in the Virtual BioBlitz, you could become Canada’s Next Great Naturalist! Get out and discover biodiversity in unexpected places like in your backyard, at the local park, or on a walk around the neighbourhood. What you find might surprise you…
